Both generations of Video Doorbell send notifications to your phone, tablet and PC when anyone presses your doorbell or triggers the built-in motion sensors. When you answer the notification, you can see, hear and speak to visitors from anywhere.
Regarding main differences, the new Video Doorbell has 1080p HD video (vs 720p HD), an additional “near” motion zone that provides motion detection in areas only 5’-15’ in front of your home, and a revamped mounting setup that simplifies installation and removal for battery charging. The new Video Doorbell also has improved audio quality and crisper night vision.
Video Doorbell is powered by a rechargeable, built-in battery or can be hardwired to existing doorbell wiring for continuous charging.
The new Video Doorbell is only backwards compatible with charging cable and a new mounting bracket comes in the box. Wedge and Corner Kits are sold separately. Solar mounts are not optimized for the new Video Doorbell and an updated version is available for purchase.

Ring Protect Basic activates video recording and photo capture and sharing for individual Ring Doorbells and Cameras. It saves all your videos to your Ring account for up to 180 days and photos for up to 7 days, so you can review what you missed and share what’s important.
Ring Protect Plus adds even more to your home security. It includes video recording, photo capture and sharing for unlimited Ring Doorbells and Cameras at your home.
It also comes with 24/7 Assisted Monitoring, an optional feature of Ring Alarm that notifies your emergency contacts via an automated call when your alarm is activated, and that includes cellular backup.

No. You can still use Video Doorbell to watch over your home and answer the door from anywhere, even without a subscription to Ring Protect. Without Ring Protect, you’ll still receive instant notifications when anyone comes to your door, and you can answer the notification to see, hear and speak to visitors in real time right from your mobile device.
